Reimagining of the vinyl package for Gorillaz self-titled, debut album, released in 2001.

In many ways, Gorillaz are a concept-driven, uniquely virtual band, with the art of their performance being very closely tied to their cartoon universe and alter-egos: 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russell. With such an unmistakable and iconic visual identity, I wanted to challenge myself with creating a new adaptation, merging an homage to Jamie Hewlett’s original illustration style with something of my own.

True to the nature of the experimental, genre-bending album, I played with a fusion of various typographic styles and imagery, all influenced by the urban, grunge aesthetics of the band. The front cover of the album references the abstract notion of the band existing in a virtual universe, where their identity lives behind a mask, or in this case, a screen.
