FALL 2022

The parameters given for this assignment were to create a series of three images, or panels, that contained some form of narrative – I chose an abstract approach to illustrating the lyrics of one of my favorite songs, Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd.

The songwriting is a story in and of itself, and I interpret the lyrics to be narrating a fighting desire and a pull towards freedom. Throughout the song, we experience the tumultuous ups, downs, successes, and failures of someone giving into their desire to discover themselves. The illustrations follow the same figure – a still-life digital painting based on “The Lost Pleiad” (1874), a marble sculpture by Randolph Rogers – as it progresses through these stages.
